JARRAD NOSKE & XAARAVID

Apprentice Jarrad Noske scored one of his biggest career wins aboard the George Daly prepared Xaaravid in Sundays $90,000 Mungrup Stud Sprint over 1300 metres at Frost Park Mt Barker.

Xaaravid ($12) took his stakes earning past the $410,000 mark when he came from tenth early to grab $4 favourite Proart 75 metres from home and then hold out the late rails flasher Crosswire for Damian Lane who went out at massive odds of $91.

The margin was half-a-head in favour of Daly's under-rated galloper who has now won nine races. Angela Smith's Crosswire came from the tail along the fence to just miss, Proart had his chances and Noble Steed was not disgraced beaten in fourth by two-lengths after a good inside passage.

Daly went close to winning the sprint in 2000 with his then veteran Railway Stakes successful sprinter Jacks Or Better who ran second to Ringroad. In 2011 he went one better.

The Mark Nelson prepared striking Viking produced a strong performance to score in the support feature event, the $20,000 2000 metre Goundry Handicap for apprentice Damian Lane.

Dark Humour attended to the pace and Lane sat back, fourth on the outside with cover. Striking Viking responded well in the straight and raced to a three-quater length win over Eternal Advice and November Red.

Jessica Valas produced a great ride to get favourite Galinba Blast home a narrow winner in race four, the Mount Barker Electrics Handicap.

Valas jumped the Gerry Hughes prepared top-weight into third on the outside and received cover when Russell Hanson aboard Flying Duel was obliged to go forward and lead the outside line after being caught deep.

Hanson went for home on his mount into the the straight and was being hailed the winner until Valas got busy on Galinba Blast. She got everything out of her mount and he got up to win by a head. I'm Called Earl was not far away third. The win was Valas' seventh on the Great Southern tracks in just over six weeks of riding in the region after her comeback to the saddle in late September.

Another top exhibition in the saddle was handed in by Peter Black in the final event aboard Angela Smith's Trimconnection.

From barrier one Black dropped into the box seat behind leader The Dark Side, came off the fence into the straight and sent his mount home a good winner by a half-a-length over strong finisher Call Me Ned for Jess Valas.

Despite possessing a propensity to be wayward after the line, Steve Wolfe's stable member Stompin proved himself to be one of the Great Southern's most promising gallopers in race two, the Magic Millions Sales Maiden.

Under experienced rider Peter Hall Stompin raced well back in the second half of the field (12th) but emerged with a powerful run in the straight and then ran past pacemaker Stripped Bear with ease. The great-great grandson of champion mare Storm Queen won by almost four-lengths unextended.

As he did at his previous start Stompin made a direct line for the mounting yard gate after the line dumping Hall and taking out his stablemate Black 'N' Green (4th) ridden by apprentice Alex Lawrence. Both riders and horses were unharmed.

Hall notch a race to race double when he produced Allem McNamara's Stormy's Son gelding Fiery Fox to win race three over 1100 metres. the Infratruct Contracting Handicap.

Fiery Fox grabbed Speedy Bohemian who had made an attempt to lead all the way and then held out All Spots while Dambig snatched third from the leader.

I'm Here To Win ran on strongly in race six, the 1200 metre Carter Williss Handicap to give Hall a winning treble. The Steve Wolfe produced mare raced fifth in the clear and had an umipeded run at the leader Pwakkers Back in the straight and despite running in near the line won by a length.

Hall replaced Shaun McGruddy on Stompin and I'm Here To Win after his fiance' Alison gave birth to a daughter on Sunday morning.

Albany jockey Stephen Sheehy experienced a change of luck in race one, the Westspeed Maiden when he landed the Denis Mcauliffe prepared Russian Rouge a 1 1/2 length winner.

Sheehy wound Russian Rouge up from tenth on the turn with a good run to beat Dolken Star (Willie Arnold) and One Talk ridden by Jeff Berry. Smart punters picked up great odds ($25.50) on the winner with the knowledge that his saddle slipped at his previous outing.

MOUNT BARKER GRAPES & GALLOPS

It’s that time again – Sunday, 15th January, another year gone,  and the very popular Mount Barker Grapes & Gallops including the $90,000 Mungrup Stud Sprint is being held at Frost Park, McDonald  in Mount Barker.

Neatly coinciding with the golf feature in Albany, Wittenoom Cup Week (15th to 23rd January) and the  Viterra Wools (formerly the  Raffles event) Bowls Carnival in Mount Barker on 18th and 19th January.  The Grapes & Gallops is the highlight of the racing season in the Great Southern where patrons are able to witness top class country racing with a nine event race card and sample the wines of ten of Mount Barker’s wineries.  Gourmet foods are also available and children’s entertainment provided.  It is a very relaxed day, with seating at tables able to be booked with either the Mount Barker Turf Club or Gilbert Wines 98514028.

The Mungrup Stud Sprint over 1300 metres attracts a strong field of sprinters from the metropolitan area and the south west, and in most years the winner has gone on to win more high class races in the Perth or the big provincial feature sprints.

Gray and Jan Williamson, and family, of Mungrup Stud  have continued to sweep all before them with the young horses produced on their Narrikup property.  Their young stallion Oratorio has been producing a string of winners of Perth feature races including the last two years’ Karrakatta Plate (2yo) winners Gold Rocks and Motion Pictures.  Other top class  black type performers are Waratah’s Secret, and tough mare Clueless Angel.  Oratorio stood the 2010 season for a service fee of  $33,000 by far the highest in the State,  and had a full book of mares.

Mungrup Stud will have a huge draft of yearlings at the Magic Millions Sales 9th to 13th February at Belmont Park with Danehill Express having a large numbers from his first crop being presented.  Due Sasso, whose two year olds are showing great promise, will also be well represented.

Enquiries or bookings can be directed to Mount Barker Turf Club Secretary,

Margaret Skinner on 0447 512873.
