JULIO SANTARELLI REPORT
New Years Eve...
Leanne Howlett can continue her fine Christmas form when she partners the Mark Nelson-trained Stripped Bear in the opening event of Mount Barker’s twilight programme on Friday.
Howlett enjoyed a double at Albany on Boxing Day and travelled to Bunbury on Tuesday to steer home Winehorse for trainer Kevin Allen.
Stripped Bear, a Bearcat gelding, is unplaced from two career starts but has shown steady improvement in both races including a last-start fourth to The Dark Side.
After crossing from his wide barrier he sat camped on the speed before fading slightly over the concluding stages.
From gate one Howlett will be able to give him a cosy run and the drop back to 1100m could be the spark required to see him land his first win in the De Bortoli Wines Maiden.
Fiery Fox is having his first start for the Allen McNamara team and was placed second to Courageous Show at Ascot on July 21 and Pearly Girl has been tracing well this preparation.
The Ben Pearce-trained Regal Miss will make her Great Southern debut in the Lower King Store Handicap (1800m).
She drops significantly in grade from her last start effort in the Listed La Trice Classic when sixth to Tranquility.
Movie World the danger along with Striking Viking who will be challenging hard.
Stable mate King Point has been racing in consistent form this campaign with two wins and two placings from four starts and the four-year-old looks the one to beat in the Mt Barker’s Electrical Handicap (2000m).
The son of Fantastic Light ran a bold third behind Key Biscuit in the Country Challenge Final at Ascot a fortnight ago when working strongly to the line.
Amplifier is capable on her day along with On The Double.
Collayshell wasn’t disgraced in the Country Challenge Final when placed eighth and will appreciate the company she faces in Rolling Acres Handicap (1300m).
Her prior form was excellent with two wins from as many starts and if she reproduces her best she will be hard to beat.
The Keilor Kid has struck form at his last two starts and backs up from his runner up finish on Boxing Day.
Kirov Park has been knocking on the door this campaign and gets her chance in the George Taylor Memorial Maiden (1300m).
But it’s an open race with many chances including Call Me Ned and Lily La Bell who also have claims.
Winning form is good form and The Dark Side can go on with it in the Mt Barker Free Range Chicken Handicap (1200m).
Super Bullant will get all the favours from barrier one and was doing his best work late when third at Narrogin.
The last race of the programme is a beauty with Jolanta Star ready to breakthrough in the Shamrock Suffolk Stud Handicap (1200m).
He has an excellent second up record and will derive great benefit from his run on December 16.
Pwakkers Back is racing consistently and was an easy winner on Boxing Day, Noble Steed will appreciate the class drop from the Scahill Stakes but it’s been a fair while since he last won a race and Mufasa has been going well at Esperance.
